Dual Cleansing- What Is It and Why You NEED To Be Doing It

This month I want to steer the topic away from makeup and onto skincare. However, the two topics are symbiotic because a good skincare routine reflects in how your makeup looks and wears. It’s time we all got real about our skincare and start taking an actual routine a little more seriously. I think a great first step in taking your skincare routine to the next level is by incorporating dual cleansing. So in this post, I am going to talk to you about the importance of dual cleansing, how to do it, what products to use, and why you, YES YOU, definitely need to be doing it. Sit back relax and let’s talk some skincare.

Dual cleansing is a pretty non-complicated topic and a great step towards advancing your skincare routine. Properly cleansing your skin is seemingly such a simple step but is so important, especially if you are a makeup wearer. Your makeup is only going to look as good as your skin does. You can buy the most expensive makeup on the market but if you aren’t taking care of your skin it doesn’t even matter. Have I gotten my point across? Okay back to dual cleansing. So it is a very simple concept that anyone should be able to do once you understand what it is and how to do it. Dual cleansing is the process of first removing your makeup with a cleansing balm/oil and then washing your face with a regular face wash. The reason you want to do this is because if you are just washing your face that has makeup on it with your regular face wash alone you aren’t actually washing your skin. And I bet if you were to wipe your face with a white towel after that you would see you still have some makeup on your face. Skin cleansers are made to do just that, cleanse the skin- not remove makeup. You need to fully remove your makeup first and then go in and use your skin cleanser. However, you don’t need to do this dual cleansing process if you aren’t wearing makeup but you must do it if you are. Your skin will be brighter and more clear if you’re removing all remnants of makeup and giving your bare skin a good wash.

I wear a lot of thick makeup so dual cleansing was a huge game changer for me and I’ve definitely reaped the benefits of it. I have tried many products over the last couple years and honestly, I love them all. You can very easily find products to use for your first step of cleansing at a variety of price ranges. I find they all do pretty much the same thing with the same ease of use, not a big difference from product to product. Usually, these products will be either an oil or a balm that you apply to dry skin and it is so satisfying to see your makeup just melt away. I will list below a few of my favorites but pretty much every skincare line out there has some version of a cleansing oil or balm.

There is one more product I have to give a special shout out to because it is one of my all-time favorite ways to remove my makeup and is so easy it doesn’t seem real. It is called the Makeup Eraser. It is essentially a reusable makeup wipe. It is a cloth that you just get wet and massage all over your face to remove makeup, even mascara! No additional product needed. So if you are someone whose main cleansing process is with a makeup wipe this product is for you! It will save you money from not having to buy pack after pack of one-time use wipes. I seriously did not believe this could work when it first came out so I bought one to try it out. I was amazed the first time I used it, it removed all of my makeup like magic! Once you’re done using it you can just toss it in the washer (on cold-no drying) and it’s good to go. I wash mine about once a week and have two towels so I’m never without a clean one.

I hope this post opened your eyes to a simple way to step up your skincare game. This is the easiest thing in the world to do and your skin will thank you!! There are a lot more skincare topics we can delve into (and we will) but getting down a cleansing routine is an important place to start and creates a nice fresh base for all other skincare products. Maybe next month I’ll tackle the topic of sun protection…that is sure to be a long one. Until then, give dual cleansing a try and let me know what you think. Adios and happy cleansing.
