Last month I kind of hinted at talking about sun safety in this month’s post. Well, I lied. Kind of. Really I just cheated. Sun safety is a broad subject that I take very seriously but it can be hard to explain to everyone else why they should too. I want to do the subject justice and give you the real knowledge and tools on to how to protect yourself from the sun.
So that’s why I decided instead to tell you about a podcast I listened to that had great information on how to protect yourself from the sun’s damaging rays from the inside out. The host of Healthy Hormones for Women Samantha Gladish interviews naturopathic doctor and clear skin expert Dr. Jen Newell about how to get healthy glowing skin and how to care for it. This episode did an excellent job explaining the correct usage of sunscreen, how to pick the right products, and how to protect your skin with the foods you eat. I know I learned something from this discussion and I bet you will too!

And I know what you might be thinking, why is a makeup artist lecturing on sun protection? Protecting your skin is the #1 way to prevent aging and have beautiful, glowing skin. That will reflect in your makeup and give you better results from your products. Try introducing some of these practices into your routine and see how easy it is to do and how much better your skin will start to look. A daily sunscreen routine is vital to youthful skin. I will share some of my favorite products for whole body protection 365 days a year!
Supergoop City Sunscreen Serum. $42 on Sephora.com. This is my favorite year-round daily Spf product. It is so lightweight, doesn’t smell, isn’t sticky, truly the perfect everyday product. It is used how you would use any serum in your routine.
Image Skincare daily matte moisturizer. $39 on ImageSkincare.com. This stuff is AMAZING. I use this on top of the Supergoop serum for maximum protection. This moisturizer does a great job of prepping the skin for makeup application as well.
Supergoop Body Butter +Spf 40. $34 on Sephora.com. Another one of my all-time favorites. I use this every single day of the year. No, seriously. It’s the perfect way to get your daily sunscreen for days when you are spending little time outdoors but still need protection for those quick moments that you are. Super lightweight, very hydrating and an easy alternative for a daily body butter.
Hawaiin Tropics Sheer Touch Spf 30. $8 at Target.com. This is my go-to product when I’m going to be spending more time outdoors than usual but not at the pool or hiking. It is a full-blown sunscreen without being greasy so its comfortable to wear with clothes on and not gross feeling. There is an aerosol version as well that I like to use when I’m reapplying. Definitely a staple in my collection!
Neutrogena Beach Defense Spf 70. $9 on Target.com. This is the heavy duty sunscreen I depend on when I am going to be outdoors for an extended amount of time, whether its hiking, sitting on the beach or a day in the pool. This offers me the best protection when I am sweating and active. It also comes in an aerosol that I use for reapplying.
I know that might seem a little excessive but for me personally, it works. Everyone who knows me knows I am crazy about sun protection but it’s because I realize it’s the best way to preserve my skin long term. Which may not be important to everyone so use what makes sense for you and your lifestyle. This is my current routine and has been for quite some time because I really enjoy all these products and find they make a great team for daily sun protection. Physical protection is a useful and important tool as well, such as hats, sunglasses, and cover-ups. I for one am definitely going to be trying some of the products that were mentioned in the podcast because I would love to have a more natural alternative to a product I’m putting on my body every day. I want to know your sunscreen faves too, I’m always on the hunt for a great new product so let me know. Alright, that’s all for now. Enjoy the warm days but use protection 😉
